Obituary for Alva Nalani Fonoimoana

Alva Nalani Kalama Fonoimoana, age 69, passed away at her home in Laie, Oahu, Hawaii on the morning of April 9, 2016.

Nalani was born in Hoolehua, Molokai, Hawaii to Samuel Kaaumoana Kalama III and Violet Eliza Doyle. She spent her early childhood in Laie, Hawaii. She attended Laie Elementary school. Her family later moved to Kalihi where she attended Kamehameha Schools. Her family went to Japan where her father served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Nalani attended Pasadena City College and then onto Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where she earned a bachelor’s degree, she majored in Spanish and minored in French.

Nalani and her family lived in California, American Samoa, New Mexico, Hawaii and Samoa. Nalani and her husband, Carl, served a full-time mission to Apia, Samoa working in the LDS Temple and then moved to Laie, Hawaii where they served in the Polynesian Cultural Center Mission Settlement.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Malele Fonoimoana and 11 of her 12 children, Kanani Tuala, Malele Fonoimoana, Lehua Siaosi, Mataniu Manu, Opapo Fonoimoana, Samuel Fonoimoana, Nalani Young, Violet Fonoimoana-Cold, Esther Langi, Vaimasina Fonoimoana, and Valerie Fitisemanu. She has 41 of her 42 grandchildren with one more on the way.

The Family services for Nalani Fonoimoana will be held at the LDS Stake Center 55-415 Iosepa Street from 8:00 am to 9:30am on Tuesday the 19th of April with the public viewing immediately following from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. The funeral services will begin promptly at 11 am to 12 noon with the burial immediately following at the Laie Cemetery.
