Obituary for Diane Marie Schabel (Silva )

Diane Marie Schabel (Silva) passed away peacefully in her home on July 12, 2021, at the age of 67. She was born in Washington state to Lawrence & Virginia Silva but moved at a young age to Hawaii and grew up on Oahu with her 5 siblings.

She was a woman who loved her family and playing board games, card games, online games, yard games, really any games. She had a true gift for words and puzzles and had a huge vocabulary that she used to diligently solve every piece of the crossword puzzle or beat you at one of the aforementioned games. She was fiercely intelligent, although she was not keen on promoting that. Dee, as some may know her, brought so much joy and laughter to those around her. She cared deeply for others and gave freely. She was a vivacious woman who made friends everywhere she went. In her younger years, she loved sailing on Monterey Bay with her husband, Gary, and playing with her kids (and their friends). She worked many vigorous years for Safeway in California and Hawaii and made lifelong friends who became like family. One of her greatest joys was joking with her family, friends, children and grandchildren and they will never forget her contagious laugh.

Diane is survived by her loving husband Gary Schabel, son Scott (Erin) Emerson, and daughter Jennifer (Mark) Whiteley. She will be loved forever by her grandchildren Paisley Emerson, Amelie Emerson, Lydia Whiteley, and Maxwell Emerson. Diane is survived by her sister Cheryl Saunders and brothers Greg Silva, Tom Silva, Mark Silva, and Chris Silva. She will be remembered fondly by her many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and co-workers that she loved doting on.

At her request, Diane’s ashes will be scattered in the ocean near Kailua beach.
