Obituary for James William Maher

James William “Jim” “Jimmy” “Jimbo” “Poppi” “Poppi Chicken” Maher, born on May 21, 1951, passed away peacefully at the age of 70 on June 18, 2021 while on vacation in Hawaii with his family. Jim was born in Bridgeport, CT, son of James J. and Lena Matassa Maher. Jim spent most of his childhood growing up in beautiful Trumbull, CT. Always exploring and adventuring with his siblings, occasionally earning a “Lena Maher Pak-A-Pak” from his loving, yet strict, mother. He earned scholarships for both Notre Dame High School and Fairfield University in Connecticut. Jimmy took pride in being top basketball statistician while earning his BA in Economics.

Jim was the oldest of five children. His incredible work ethic and people skills blossomed early. By the young age of 12, Jimmy had his own paper route and lawn mowing service.
Always an entrepreneur at heart, he later owned his own landscaping company “Squirts Etc.”

Jim began his career in the IT/record storage industry when he was a junior in college with Leahy Business Archives. Jim’s career led him to Data Base, TAB, and finally to Iron Mountain. He was a successful, dedicated, well respected “Senator” of the business world; earning the coveted Chairman’s Club every year while at Iron Mountain. Jimbo was a mentor and inspiration to all who worked with him.

After a fulfilling, 40-year business career, retirement allowed Jim to enjoy his passions for gardening, reading, traveling, and sports. Poppi was an avid sports fan! Go Houston Astros! Go Fairfield Stags! Go Duke Blue Devils! Poppi continued his quest for adventure, finding joy in traveling with family and friends…ziplining, riding roller coasters, parasailing, and snorkeling. Above all, he cherished time spent with family, friends, and especially his grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents James and Lena Maher and brother Michael Maher. He is survived by his loving wife Diane Mitrisin-Maher of Houston, TX, son Ryan Maher (Andrea) of Dunedin, FL, daughter Jamie Stubson (Geoff) of Foster City, CA, step-daughter Jennifer Smith of Houston, TX. Poppi will be forever adored by his grandchildren; Eleanor Smith (15), Gavin Stubson (12), Aubrey Stubson (9), Taylor Stubson (6), Olivia Maher (4), Austin and Mason Maher (23months). Jimmy is survived by his sister Phyllis Tomlinson (Jack) of Madison, CT, sister Maurette Maher of Houston, TX, and brother William “Willie” Maher of Kittery, ME. Jim will be forever, fondly remembered by his niece, nephews, extended family including his Italian relatives, many good friends, and many business associates.

Poppi’s was a life filled with success, adventure, and love. Living life to the fullest. Your spirit will be with us…always. We are reminded of his strength and values in the quotes that follow.

What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us. - Helen Keller, author and political activist

When you scratch the surface, every one of us has something that we deeply want to contribute to the world. All we have to do is step up and do it. - Jack Canfield, motivational author

Good night sweet prince. - William Shakespeare

In lieu of flowers the family recommend donations be made in Jim's name to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
