Obituary for Mark Derryl Schake

Mark Derryl Schake, a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on February 21, 2021, in Mililani, HI, from injuries sustained during a bicycle accident. His sudden passing has saddened many who knew and loved him over his 56 years.

Mark was the first of six children born to Derryl and Lynette (Lamb) Schake. Mark's childhood was spent in MN, IA, and MO where he graduated from Hickman High School in 1982. He was accepted to enter the United States Military Academy at West Point shortly after. A "starman" near the top of his class he was a 1986 West Point graduate, of which his family was so proud!

During his time serving as a 1LT, Mark was medically retired due to a hand injury while on active duty. He decided to join the staff of the Navigators (military ministry) right after leaving the Army in 1990. He met Molly at Glen Eyrie Conference Center in Colorado Springs the very next year. They were married in 1992.

Mark and Molly and their children, Emily, Wendy, Nathan and Brooke spent their lives ministering to military servicemen and women in Colorado, New York and Hawaii. Early in their marriage, they lived in Colorado Springs, spending much time at Peterson AFB. They moved to Highland Falls, NY in 1993 to minister to cadets at The United States Military Academy at West Point, where they spent the next 13 years. As part of "The Long Gray Line" himself, Mark wanted the share his Christian faith and the good news of the Gospel to cadets as others had done for him during his days there. Mark's love for Christ and his deep heart for those who didn't yet know Christ has always motivated him.

The Schake family moved to Hawaii in 2006, where Mark later formed his own organization, ministering mostly to airmen on Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, and also Molly to army wives on Schofield Barracks.

Bicycling was a hobby for Mark and he loved it! He had become an experienced cyclist, having ridden the Honolulu Century Ride several times. He absolutely loved biking through Hawaii's lovely scenery and weather. Little did we know on that particular Sunday afternoon, he would "ride on Home!" He is deeply missed by many. Aloha 'Oe, Mark! We love you.

Mark is survived by his wife Molly and children Emily Schake, Wendy (Schake) Lyons, son-in-law Daniel Lyons, Nathan Schake and Brooke Schake. Also siblings and their spouses, Paul and Melissa Schake, Victor and Laura (Schakes) Bowles, Trent and Heather Schake, Eric and Kerri (Schake) Anderson and Caleb and Sarah (Schake) Moore, all of Missouri. Also brother-in-law Chad and Therra (Ebwe) Weinberg of Alexandria, VA and mother-in-law Joanna Weinberg of Scotts, MI, as well as 31 wonderful nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews!

A memorial service is scheduled at Trinity Church of Central Oahu at 2:00 p.m. HST on April 3, 2021, which will also be livestreamed. Mark will be laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific on April 5, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. HST.
