Obituary for Mark "Sole Papa" Anthony Makakona Tanele

Mark “Sole Papa” Anthony Makakona Tanele, 59, of Waipahu, passed away on June 13, 2022 in Kapolei. He was born on March 11, 1963 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Ballard Family Mortuary; service will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Mark was known as the provider and protector of his family and friends. He graduated from James B. Castle High School in 1981. He worked for Honolulu Transit as a Handi-van driver for 27 years. He was known for making the most delicious Lomi ʹōʹio in town and catching big Samoan crabs. He impacted so many young lives when coaching flag football for Play Sports Hawaii. He enjoyed fishing, building and racing Toyota trucks, raising chickens, and watching his grandchildren play sports. His favorite phrase was “…And we do it again.”

He is survived by his beloved wife, Janice Tanele;
His stepmother, Norma Tanele;
His sons: Thomas Tanele (Jennifer), Tyran Tanele (Danielle), Channon Chevalier, and Terrence Tanele (Jade);
His 14 moʹopuna: Tehani, Trystyn (deceased), Jensen, Triselle, Tripsen, Tristal Lee, Tyran Boy, Aiyana, Taleyah, Taylee, Terrence Jr., Riyahna, Aziyah, and Baby Tanele;
His siblings: Maka Tanele (Eunice), Valerie Tanele (Rodney) Mark T. Tanele (Lolita), Moka Tanele (Malia), Melanie Navales (Kevin), Jason Olsen (Violet), Deenie Tanele, Layne Tanele, Prince Tanele, and Christian Tanele (Robbie);
as well as lots of nieces and nephews.
